International Baccalaureate DP and CP

IB World School

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) is among the most rigorous college preparatory curriculum available and is a prestigious offering that is available at only select schools in Arkansas and across the United States. The International Baccalaureate® (IB) curriculum matches in quality, but exceeds in rigor above Advanced Placement (AP) classes, during the college application process. IB classes at the secondary level also offer the same opportunities for students to gain college credit for courses taken during high school. At the HSWCHS, the IB Diploma Programme and IB Career Programme are available. _________________________________

IB Diploma Programme

The  Diploma Programme (DP) aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. It addresses the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students, and is respected by universities across the globe.

Through the DP schools are able to develop students who:

- have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge

- flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically

- study at least two languages

- excel in traditional academic subjects

- explore the nature of knowledge through the programme’s unique theory of knowledge course

Made up of the three required components, the DP core aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills. The three core elements are:

- Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know. - The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper. - Creativity, activity, service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts. _________________________________

IB Career ProgrammeIB Career Programme (CP) students undertake a minimum of two IB Diploma Programme (DP) courses, a core consisting of four components and a career-related study. For CP students, DP courses provide the theoretical underpinning and academic rigour of the programme; the career-related study further supports the programme’s academic strength and provides practical, real-world approaches to learning; and the CP core helps them to develop skills and competencies required for lifelong learning.

The CP consists of a three-part educational framework:

- courses from the IB’s Diploma Programme (DP) - the CP core - career-related studies.

Students complete at least two DP courses in any of that programme's subject groups. The CP core components give context to the DP courses and the career-related study, drawing all aspects of the framework together. Through the CP core, students develop personal qualities and professional skills, as well as intellectual habits required for lifelong learning.
