During an International Baccalaureate (IB) Celebration, HSWCHS honored students for various levels of participation or completion of courses within the IB Programme. IB is among the most rigorous and demanding college preparatory curriculums available in the United States, for both public and private schools. 230 HSSD 9th-12th grade students are currently participating in some level of IB courses. The HSSD is the only district  in Arkansas to offer IB course offerings from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Students that complete IB courses receive the same weighted credit toward their GPA and college concurrent credit as Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer, but also are challenged with lab projects, oral presentations, service learning, extended essays, and other critical thinking skills and action oriented requirements.  The primary purpose of the IB Programme is to prepare students for the demands of college, teach research and writing skills that are demanded of college classes and careers, and create a more broadened understanding of a global society. The IB Programme is an internationally recognized curriculum.

HSWCHS offers several options for participation in IB. The IB Diploma Programme within the Liberal Studies Career Academy is the most challenging curriculum, offers the best preparation for college courses, and receives the highest graduation honors. The IB Career-related Programme can fit into many different career pathways/academies depending upon the two year career pathway chosen by the student. Students may also choose to take a single IB course because he/she excels in one subject over others, to increase an ACT test score, or to strengthen research and critical thinking skills.

IB students are not the only ones held to higher standards. IB instructors are also held to strict criteria by the HSSD and the IB International Programme. The  IB Organization audits school programmes and IB instructors individually once every five years. Additionally, they review a sample of selected course work from IB instructors every year to ensure subject material, curriculum requirements, and testing requirements are kept consistent across the world. The mission of the Hot Springs School District is to educate and empower each student to graduate from high school college and/or career ready, respect diversity, and to be contributing members of a global society.
