This week, upgrades were completed to the HSSD High School cafeteria, allowing for more convenient access by students, and additional tasty options for all food palates.

The HSSD uses Chartwells as a food service management company to plan and serve meals per state-requirements. Chartwells works hard to follow guidelines while offering fresh, and tasty meals. With new upgrades, the HSSD team expanded food options to those offered across five stations. Students now choose from four entrée stations and a salad bar. Entrée stations include: a create-your-own station with rotating options like pasta and home-style dishes; pizza station; fresh deli station with a newly added panini press; a station including burgers, chicken sandwiches, and grilled items; and a newly added latin food variety station. High school students choose from meals created at all five food stops, and then are also able to choose between fruit, drinks, and snack options as they check out. Upgrades also increased student accessibility. Previously only three lines were available for food selection, no matter what food options students were choosing. This oftentimes created long wait periods. Many students were deciding not eat from the cafeteria at all. Upgrades allow for five constantly moving lines that are connected to four checkout stations. Students usually don’t have longer than a 3-5 minute wait as they move through options.

By November, Chartwells also plans to collect student votes on menu concepts that they will be invited to sample at a table in the cafeteria separate from serving lines. Meal items chosen by student votes will then be served at an entirely new, additional station in months following.

Upgrades also include an additional coffee shop station separate from the cafeteria space, to offer fresh coffee, hot chocolate, and other drinks. It will also include a convenient grab-and-go section with breakfast and lunch items like muffins and granola bars, and hot items including biscuit sandwiches and pizza by the slice. The coffee shop station should be completed by Christmas.

Meal options with the new upgrades still fall under the districtwide free breakfast and lunch program, through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) that the district received for the entire school year. Students are familiar with which items to choose in order to complete a full meal, and select appropriately to stay within free meal options.
